The North Carolina Private Protective Services Board has authorized approved Continuing Education Hours Training Courses to be presented virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic state of emergency. NC-PPSB-18-507: Active Shooter provides insight into the Active Shooter incident and teaches Department of Homeland Security techniques on how to respond to an Active Shooter incident. During the course, students learn what an Active Shooter is; how to survive an Active Shooter incident utilizing the run, hide, and fight methodology, how to prepare and prevent an Active Shooter incident, developing an Emergency Action Plan, individual responsibilities, as well as identifying the physiological responses to stress and traumatic events and how they impact your ability to fight or flee.
NC-PPSB-16-164: Debriefing a Witness provides techniques on how to prepare for a witness debriefing, development of a structured debriefing plan, as well as leading a witness through the debriefing process. During the course, students learn what debriefing is; six goals of debriefing a witness; debriefing preparation; seven steps of the debriefing process; emotionality; and common mistakes made in debriefing a witness.
NC-PPSB-16-102: Introduction to Surveillance teaches the skills necessary to provide a basic foundation in order to effectively conduct surveillance for investigative purposes. During the course, students learn what surveillance is; purposes of surveillance; surveillance operator qualifications; methods/types of surveillance; as well as methods of communication during surveillance operations.
NC-PPSB-16-101: Elicitation of Information teaches the skills necessary to create a foundation for effectively eliciting information for security and investigative purposes. During the course, students learn what elicitation is; who utilizes elicitation techniques; benefits and characteristics of elicitation; elicitor's qualities; 7 steps of elicitation; human traits; conversational techniques; planning considerations; as well as recognizing signs of elicitation.
NC-PPSB-16-163: Interview Techniques provides techniques to effectively prepare for and conduct an interview for a myriad of investigative purposes. From neighbors and co-workers to completing a background investigation to determining potential witnesses for a legal case, this course is designed to give the interviewer a flexible foundation. During the course, students learn what interviewing is; purposes of interviewing; interviewing drawbacks; interviewer characteristics; how to identify target groups; how to arrange, prepare for and conduct the interview; questioning methods; interviewing tips and documenting the interview.
NC-PPSB-16-162: Critical Thinking provides techniques which help investigators, detectives, special agents, attorneys and anyone else avoid assumptions and false premises by using logic, reasoning, critical thinking, and the scientific method in their investigations. This course is designed to enhance the following skills: creativity, flexibility in thought, the ability to make decisions based upon incomplete information, complex pattern recognition abilities, and information fusion.
PPSB-18-513: Courtroom Testimony covers topics of consideration to properly prepare yourself and your investigators to testify in court. Topics discusses include but are not limited to: Investigator's Notes, Surveillance Logs, Date/Time Stamped Videos, Case Reports vs. Sworn Affidavits/Statements, Veracity of Reporting, Facts vs. Assessments (opinions), Credibility, Reputation, Manner of Dress in the Courtroom, Manner of Speech and Demeanor on the Stand and in the Courtroom, as well as Manner of Conduct during the Investigation and in the Courtroom. This course is designed to enhance your preparation for and success of testifying in court in order to enhance your client's case, develop a positive reputation for yourself and your firm, as well as to market your professionalism and reliability.
NC-PPSB-16-100: Projecting a Positive Image discusses the importance of presenting a positive and professional image while representing yourself and your organization during the course of your work. During the course, students learn what critical thinking is; the core skills of critical thinking; critical thinking tools; how critical thinking applies to investigations; universal intellectual standards; analysis of thinking; steps to improve thinking; understanding sources of information; and hindrances to critical thinking.
